Hawkswood School Nutrition Program

Hawkswood School, Eatontown, NJ - nutrition program at school for students with disabilitiesWelcome to Hawkswood School Cafeteria, a groundbreaking school nutrition program, where we promote healthy and educated food choices to last a lifetime. Our goal is to educate our students to become informed, health-minded individuals in today’s society.

Our Menu
Our menu consists of whole grains, legumes, fresh fruits and vegetables. All entrees are baked, steamed or broiled for optimal nutritional benefit. Though not a completely organic kitchen, we do offer a majority of organic products. We use no GMO (genetically modified organism) products, no high fructose corn syrup, and we avoid trans fats and hydrogenated oils. All milk and animal proteins offered are hormone and antibiotic free. We have created a nutritionally sound menu that is desirable to children of all ages. In addition, food textures are customized for students requiring texture modification for their nutritional needs.

Food Allergies
With a high number of allergies in our student population, we have removed a number of allergens from the menu. These include eggs, wheat, gluten, peanuts, and dairy products. Following U.S.D.A. guidelines, we still offer 1% and 2% milk in 8oz. cartons. The milk is isolated from the kitchen refrigerator to prevent any cross contamination from storage to service.

Transition Services
In coordination with Transition Services, we also provide commercial kitchen training, work detail and food handling management, offering a realistic work experience in the food industry.

On a daily basis, our kitchen staff teaches hands-on “food-for-life skills” and personal hygiene management. Understanding the benefits of a healthy balanced diet at an early age is important, and will instill better choices into adulthood.
